FASHION DESIGN WORK PLACEMENT

Join LABRUM London, an African British Heritage fashion brand whose purpose is to tell the untold stories of West Africa and to help bridge the gap between Western society and African cultures. 

We are currently offering a Fashion Design work experience placement to join the team at our 180 Strand studio. This is an expenses-only work placement. Travel and food expenses will be covered. The position is for a duration of 3 months with the potential of an extension and permanent position. 

ABOUT THE ROLE

The Fashion Design Intern will work closely with the Design team, gaining hands-on experience across the creative process of developing a fashion collection. From initial research and concept development to garment design, sampling and final collection preparation, this role offers an opportunity to learn how ideas are translated into finished garments.

The successful candidate will support the team with design research, mood boards, garment development, sample organisation and collection preparation, gaining valuable insight into the creative process behind LABRUM's collections and runway presentations.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Design Research & Concept Development

• Assist with visual research, trend research and the development of creative references for upcoming collections.
• Support the creation of mood boards, colour palettes, design boards and other visual presentation materials.
• Research fabrics, textures, prints, silhouettes and design details that align with the LABRUM aesthetic.
• Help develop and organise creative concepts, references and design ideas throughout the collection development process.
• Studio support.

2. Garment Design & Development

• Support with garment CADS, drawings and visualisations.
• Assist with the development and organisation of design specifications, garment details and reference documents.
• Help research fabrics, trims, finishes and construction details.
• Assist with reviewing samples, documenting design amendments and tracking changes throughout the development process.
• Support the organisation of samples, fabrics, swatches and design references.
• Assist with fittings and contribute to documenting design observations and garment adjustments.
• Help coordinate shipping, courier bookings and production documentation.

3. Fashion Week Preparation

• Support the Design team in preparing the collection ahead of London Fashion Week.
• Assist with organising garments, samples, accessories and design references for fittings and presentations.
• Help document design changes and ensure garments reflect the team's creative direction.
• Support the preparation, organisation and final checks of the collection ahead of the show.
• Assist with general design studio tasks and contribute to the smooth running of the creative process.

CANDIDATE PROFILE

You are creative, highly organised and eager to learn, with a genuine interest in fashion design, garment development and the creative process behind a collection. You have a strong visual eye, an appreciation for detail and an interest in exploring how culture, identity, craftsmanship and storytelling can inform contemporary fashion. You enjoy working in a fast-paced, collaborative environment where no two days are the same. You are comfortable balancing creative tasks with practical studio responsibilities, take initiative and are happy to get involved wherever support is needed.

REQUIRED SKILLS & EXPREINCE

• Interest in Fashion Design: A genuine interest in design, garment development, textiles and the creative process behind a collection.
• Creativity & Visual Research: A strong visual eye and an interest in research, mood boards, colour, print, silhouette and design references.
• Organisation: Strong organisational skills and the ability to manage samples, design references and multiple tasks with care.
• Attention to Detail: A meticulous approach to garment details, fabrics, finishes and design documentation.
• Technical Skills: Comfortable using Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop and other design softwares.
• Attitude: Positive, proactive and eager to learn, with a hands-on approach and willingness to support wherever needed, particularly in the lead-up to London Fashion Week.
